GVCW Visa Center for Greece Launched in Beijing

The Greek GVCW launched its visa application center (VAC) in Beijing on Thursday, June 7. The opening of such a center will assist the Greek consular authorities in providing better and faster visa application services for those who wish to visit Greece.

Mr. Leonidas Rokanas, the Greek Ambassador in China, said during the opening ceremony that tourism is a pillar of the Greek economy and that the increase of the numbers of Chinese tourists visiting Greece is particularly evident in recent years. Greece is a country which can meet the demands of the travelers in providing an ideal environment for tourists. Its beautiful coastlines, the hundreds of islands, the numerous ports and harbors, archeological sites and museums, make Greece a unique tourist destination.

The first direct flight between Beijing and Athens was initiated on September 30, 2017 with three scheduled flights every week. The Ambassador expressed his hope that direct flights would be initiated from Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Chongqing and other Chinese cities in the very near future.

Mr. Eleftherios Oikonomou, the President of GVCW, promised that the GREECE VACs would provide the best possible visa services for the Chinese tourists who want to travel to visit Greece. He said visa applications are being processed in the most efficient and fastest way. An application normally takes no more than two days to be processed and never more than a week.

GVCW Visa Center for Greece Inaugurated in Beijing

The opening ceremony of a new visa application center was co-sponsored by the Greek Embassy in Beijing and the GVCW Hellas on Thursday, June 7. The event was hosted by H.E. the Ambassador Leonidas Rokanas.

In his speech at the reception after the ribbon cutting, Ambassador Leonidas Rokanas said that tourism is one of the pillars of the Greek economy, accounting for 20% of its GDP. Greece surpassed the previous highest record in tourism development and the revenues generated from tourism increased by 7.5% annually from 2015 to 2017, a growth rate of twice the global average. Specifically, the number of tourists from China increased exponentially with a 40% increase in 2017 and a projected 50% for 2018.

The ambassador said that 2017 had also been a very special year as the first direct flight between Greece and China has been initiated and the scheduled flights have since increased from two flights per week to three. The next target is to initiate direct flights to Athens from cities like Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu and Chongqing.

The ambassador particularly pointed out that Greece and China are the only two countries with a history of more than 5000 years and a strong and lasting influence on world civilization. A strong bilateral bond has formed in political, economic and cultural aspects, he said. With its natural beauty, archeological sites and rare treasures, Greece stands as a unique and ideal tourist destination. The beauty of Greece lies in its endless coastline of up to 190,000 kilometers, numerous ports and harbors, various archeological sites and over 500 museums.

On bilateral cooperation in culture and tourism, the ambassador lauded the EU-China Tourism Year 2018 as an important driver. Greece and the UN tourism organization will co-sponsor an international conference on Silk Road. Greece will also organize culture-related activities. In September 2019, an exhibition about the Antikythera Shipwreck 2000 years ago will be held in Beijing’s Palace Museum. Preparation for another important exhibition in Beijing Capital Museum is also underway.

From his part, Mr. Eleftherios Oikonomou, the President of the GVCW, promised during his speech that the visa application centers would do all the necessary to provide efficient services and meet the demands of the Chinese tourists. Greece is a beautiful, hospitable and safe country, the home to the Greek gods. Greece and China are countries with long history and ancient civilizations and have very good relations. As such, the number of Chinese tourists to visit Greece are expected to increase exponentially and they are most welcome in Greece. Mr. Dimitris Platis, CEO of GCVW, said that the 15 visa centers in China would improve their service quality and efficiency in the shortest possible time. The 90% of the visa applications will take two days’ time to be processed and never more than a week. In addition, customized VIP services are provided to meet a variety of demands.

The new VAC located in Sanlitun area, was inaugurated and the ribbon was cut on the same day. Attending the inauguration were Mr. Eleftherios Oikonomou, Mr. Dimitris Platis, Mr. Anastasios Kezas, the head of Consular Section of the Greek Embassy and Mr. Euthymios Athanasiadis, Press and Communication Counselor of the Greek Embassy.
